Senior Construction Inspector

Job Title:        Senior Construction Inspector

Department:    Construction Admin

Reports To:     Construction Admin Project Manager

 

Summary

Inspects work quality and materials used in a variety of complex public works, capital improvement, engineering and developer-built projects within the private and public right-of-way including construction, repair, maintenance or alterations.  Read and interpret construction documents including plans, specifications, and geotechnical reports.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Performs on-site inspections in a variety of capital improvement projects
  • Review and interpret plans, special provisions, standard specifications, and geotechnical reports
  • Document construction progress on daily reports
  • Coordinate with contractors, material testers, and public agency staff
  • Measuring quantities of work for pay applications
  • Retains plans and specifications until project completion; checks “as-built” plans for completeness and accuracy
  • Mentor junior field staff

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of construction methods, materials, specifications, and equipment
  • Field engineering and inspection practices and basic design criteria for construction projects
  • Safe work practices and regulations pertaining to the work
  • Able to communicate clearly
  • Familiar with Microsoft Suite (Office/Word/Excel/Outlook)
  • Mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry as applied to construction inspection work
  • May serve as inspector-in-charge of a construction project, including reviewing the work of consulting inspectors
  • Work independently or a part of a team

Education and Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ten (10) years of related experience
  • Some college level course work in pre-engineering, construction technology or a related field is preferred

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Must possess a valid Nevada Class C Driver’s License at the time of appointment.  Has or willing to obtain certifications such as OSHA 10, ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade 1, Traffic Control Technician/Supervisor, Water Pollution Control Manager, or other nationally recognized inspection certifications.

Working Conditions

Work is performed outdoors up to 90% of the time with exposure to all types of weather conditions.

Work with exposure to potentially hazardous materials and in hazardous conditions, such as traffic or in construction zones, uneven terrain, and exposure to moving objects, vehicles, sharp objects, pinch points, dust, noise, vibration, extreme heat, or cold, slippery surfaces, toxic or caustic chemicals. May have to work in cramped quarters in trenches, etc.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands, stand, walk, crouch, bend, stoop, stretch, and lift.  Employee must have specific vision abilities to include close and distance vision, full color vision, and ability to adjust focus working with computer and business equipment.  Work may require moderate physical exertion with long periods of sitting or standing. Ability to operate a motor vehicle in order to travel to and from the work site; strength and stamina to inspect various public work projects; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
