Summary

As a civil engineer student intern at GCW, you will have the opportunity to further your education by applying learned material in a professional employment setting, make new connections, and gain hands-on experience. You will work in a collaborative environment and support the Project Management team in efforts of design, document development and administration, depending on expertise and knowledge. This is a part-time position.

Essential Functions

  • Performs simple calculations and computer data entry
  • Performs basic design tasks and drawings using computer-aided design (CADD)
  • Assists staff with various project tasks, including researching, compiling and evaluating project data, and preparing reports
  • Addressing utility/agency/project manager red lines and comments to plans
  • Attends in-house training programs

Water/Wastewater Division

  • Perform water and sewer analysis
  • Prepare GIS databases and exhibits documenting existing and proposed infrastructures
  • Condition assessment of sewer facilities and rehab recommendations
  • Improvement plans for reservoirs, pump stations, and sewer lift stations
  • Improvement plans for major utility infrastructure
  • Sewer and Water Main infrastructure design
  • Sewer Capacity Studies
  • Perform Hydraulic Analysis
  • Perform Utility Coordination

Flood Control Division

  • Technical and Master Drainage Studies including hydrologic and hydraulic calculations
  • HEC1, SF6, WSPG, HEC RAS, FlowMaster
  • Detention Basin design
  • FEMA flood zone mapping
  • CCRFCD Master Plan updates
  • Channel and drainage infrastructure design
  • Prepare GIS and CAD Drainage Exhibits for existing and proposed conditions.
  • Drainage Exhibits (Vicinity, Location, FIRM, F-MAP, SOILS, Precipitation, Drainage Basin, Facilities)

Airport and Summerlin Division

  • Conceptual Planning
  • Conceptual Design Report
  • Airside Design (Runway/Taxiway/Apron)
  • Landside Design (Roadway, Curbfront, Parking)

Transportation/Traffic Division

  • Preliminary Design Reports

  • Arterial and freeway design including roadside safety

  • Addressing utility/agency/project manager red lines and comments to plans

Structural Division

  • Design bridges utilizing AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Manual
  • Design buildings utilizing IBC
  • Design retaining walls
  • Design flood control structures including detention basin infrastructure, junction structures
  • Design water reservoirs and pump stations
  • Perform structural analysis using applicable software

Land Development Division

  • Residential
  • Multi-Family
  • Summerlin
  • Commercial/Retail/Industrial

  • Schools
    • Design of the above includes:
      • Preparing improvement plans including grading, utility, traffic design, miscellaneous plans using applicable agency/entity/code requirements
      • Laying out a site given parameters from client
      • Working with drainage closely to coordinate size, location and material of storm drain facilities
      • Creating footprints using architectural drawings
      • Preparing standard plans for submittal to agencies and plot plans
      • Understanding/keeping track of specific client preferences
      • Creating exhibits showing hard costs associated with the development of a site
      • Creating spreadsheets to aid in design
      • Creating Miscellaneous Exhibits
      • Going on Site Visits/Inspecting the site
      • Occasionally meeting with Agency & Client

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Possesses ability to apply engineering principles to evaluate and solve basic engineering problems.

Education and Experience Requirements

Currently enrolled in University/College Civil Engineering Program.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Working knowledge of CAD Civil 3D software and Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Project) is a plus. Valid driver’s license. Travel in personal vehicle may be required.
